Sports Gaming Law

On May 14th, 2018, the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Provision Act of 1992 (PASPA), the federal law banning single-game wagering. Instead, the ruling paved the way for states to introduce legislation in the ever-growing sports wagering and gaming industry.

This ultimately led to the enactment of Maryland House Bill 940 by Governor Larry Hogan in May of the 2021 legislative session. The bill authorized sports wagering license holders to accept wagers on sporting events by specified methods and in specified locations.

Soon thereafter, Maryland Legislators constructed a plethora of regulations, restrictions, terms, permissions, exceptions, etc. by enacting the "black letter law" in the Annotated Code of Maryland which now governs the new industry of Sports Wagering in our state.
