Federal Firearm Rights Restoration Program

The recently announced Federal Firearm Rights Restoration program provides individuals convicted of felony offenses an avenue to petition the Department of Justice (DOJ) to restore their Second Amendment right to own and possess a firearm. This program creates a pathway for persons with felony convictions to apply for the restoration of their gun rights. Much like a Presidential Pardon, this program is not automatic, and many who apply will be denied. This process involves thorough vetting of each applicant including Federal and State background checks designed to ensure that applicants are of good character and do not pose a threat to the community.

According to the DOJ, the Federal Firearm Rights Restoration program will be launched in the following stages:

• September 25, 2026: Application opens to invited candidates
• November 4, 2026: Application opens to the public (the first 5,000 candidates can apply)
• January 4, 2027: Application opens to the public (500 more candidates can apply and the application fee will begin)

This is not a simple process. Even after completing all required forms, applicants will have the ability to submit additional material and information to show DOJ officials that they are worthy of having their rights restored.
